Serving Ohio Veterans is an AmeriCorps program with members in Columbus, Ohio who serve a term filled with life-changing experiences serving others. Members serve at military installations, government, and non-profit community agencies. The mission of Serving Ohio Veterans is to equip and empower military members, veterans, their families, and those serving them with the knowledge to identify the warning signs of suicide, confidence to ask about thoughts of suicide, and ability to refer to mental health providers with competence in military culture.
Members will spend the majority of their time serving at their host site (and working remotely) but will also be connecting with the Ohio Army National Guard (OHARNG) and military-serving organizations across Ohio to promote greater understanding and awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.
The AmeriCorps Veteran Liaison will promote Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to help lower veteran suicide, bring awareness to mental health care, and develop partnerships with community-based veteran organizations. They will accomplish this by disseminating health and safety education materials, as well as supporting individual veteran resource tabling sessions that will provide services statewide. This will also help support the veteran objectives of the Ohio Governor’s Challenge.
Military or veteran status is preferred but not required. Current military service members (AGR, ADT, or ADOS) are not eligible.
