Serving Ohio Veterans is an AmeriCorps program in Columbus, Ohio, with members serving a term filled with life-changing experiences helping others. Members serve at military installations, government, and non-profit community agencies. The mission of Serving Ohio Veterans is to equip and empower military members, veterans, their families, and those serving them with the knowledge to identify the warning signs of suicide. They will help them develop the confidence to ask about thoughts of suicide and the ability to refer to mental health providers with competence in military culture.
Members will spend most of their time serving at their host site (working remotely) and connecting with the Ohio Army National Guard and military-serving organizations across Ohio to promote greater understanding and awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.
Our five AmeriCorps positions:
1) Veteran Liaison
2) Veteran Liaison – Be Present Ohio
3) Veteran Liaison – Sources of Strength Ohio
4) Veteran Liaison – Men’s Outreach
5) Veteran Liaison – Lethal Means
The AmeriCorps Veteran Liaison will promote Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to help lower veteran suicide, bring awareness to mental health care, and develop partnerships with community-based veteran organizations. They will accomplish this by disseminating health and safety education materials and supporting individual veteran resource tabling sessions that will provide services statewide. Members will support the mission of the Suicide Prevention Plan for Ohio (2020-2022), Strategy 4 – Objective 3. This mission will also help support the veteran objectives of the Ohio Governor’s Challenge.
Military or veteran status is preferred but not required. Current military service members (AGR, ADT, or ADOS) are not eligible.
