Collaborative vs. Directive: Supporting Children and Adolescents When Someone Dies of Suicide Presented by Joan Schweizer Hoff, MA.
While many people are unsure of how to support grieving children and teens, this uncertainty can be particularly overwhelming when someone dies by suicide. Stigma, combined with adults’ natural instinct to protect children from painful experiences, can become obstacles to providing the information, acknowledgment, and opportunities for expression children most need. In this workshop, we will share what we’ve learned from working with grieving families over the past 30 years, including developmental aspects of grief, common grief responses and needs, and effective ways to support children and teens in their grief.
