Special Coalition Partnership Meeting with CareSource

Oct 18, 2022

Event Time: 10:30am-11:30am

Five Ohioans die by suicide every day. Historically, the social service and related fields have been taught individuals experiencing suicidal ideation disengage from services and isolate themselves. The CareSource Ohio Behavioral Health team recently pulled claims data that identifies the contrary:

  • 30% of members had a claim on the day prior to the suicide attempt diagnosis
    • Preventative Care: 16% Adults and 24% Children
    • Dental: 12% Adults and 19% Children
    • Vision: 7% Adults and 9% Children
  • Over 50% of these members were not receiving services with a mental health agency

The appointments prior to a suicide attempt are potential opportunities for suicide screening that could lead to referrals for resources, crisis intervention, and possibly prevent suicide attempts. The Behavioral Health team would like to share CareSource claims data and facilitate conversations with stakeholders around the state. They want to gather feedback and information to identify ways to support providers around the state on how to incorporate suicide prevention strategies.
